Dragonfly Totem
Tribes have their own representations of the animals, insects, colors, and people they carve on totem poles. As a result, the dragonfly is one of the hardest symbols to find on totem poles. The dragonfly has different meaning to different tribes. To some it represents flighty and carefree, strong imagination, and higher aspirations. To other tribes the symbol signifies happiness, speed and purity. There are even some tribes in which the dragonfly is considered to be the souls of the dead. Insects in general were very rare on totem poles and because totem poles are made of wood, many have not survived throughout the years.
This totem was carved by artist Tommy Cragg who uses a chainsaw to carve this beautifuly dragonfly totem pole. It is located in Barnes Park, Sunderland.
